Undergraduate study of Colar Wang (2022–2025)
This article documents Colar Wang's undergraduate study at the University of Nottingham, where he completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Financial Mathematics between September 2022 and June 2025.1
Admission and awardedit
Wang was admitted to the Financial Mathematics program at Nottingham's School of Mathematical Sciences in September 2022 and received the International Orientation Scholarship, granted to approximately the top five percent of international applicants.1
Courseworkedit
Wang's undergraduate coursework covered:
- Mathematical Finance
- Risk Management
- Statistical Inference
- Financial Econometrics
These subjects provided the foundation for his subsequent work in quantitative research at CICC, CITIC Futures, and China Galaxy Securities during his undergraduate years.
Project leadershipedit
AI-Driven Crypto Portfolio Optimizer (2024–2025)
Between October 2024 and March 2025, during his final year at Nottingham, Wang served as Team Lead on an AI-Driven Crypto Portfolio Optimizer, a deep-learning portfolio-allocation system covering 17 distinct crypto-assets. The system combined deep-learning return forecasts with volatility signals to drive an automated rebalancing strategy, and reported a roughly 90 percent reduction in forecasting error and a simulated Sharpe ratio of 1.3 under backtest.
Wang has described the project as the point at which he first committed, publicly, to a bias toward "data-adaptive systems rather than rule-adaptive systems" — a framing he has since carried into his AI product work. The full project report is available as a PDF.
Parallel activitiesedit
During his time at Nottingham, Wang completed three consecutive internships in Chinese finance: at CICC in summer 2023, CITIC Futures in winter 2023–2024, and China Galaxy Securities in summer 2024. He has described the undergraduate period as formative for his later work, both mathematically (through the financial-mathematics curriculum) and operationally (through the parallel internships).
